Area

People visit Hakone seeking the coolness of the hills in summer and to soak up the deep warmth of Onsen in Winter.  Due to its easy accessibility from Tokyo, it gets visitors in large numbers throughout the year.  Hakone is an extremely popular tourist destination, but we would like to present a different face of Hakone to those who want to make it their home.

1. Things to know before you decide to live in Hakone

(1) What to be aware of when living in Hakone

Car is a necessity
Most vacation areas are developed far from the hustle bustle of the cities so that you can enjoy the natural beauty and calmness. Hakone is no exception to this rule. Although all major sightseeing spots are easily accessible by public transport, but for those seeking to live here long term, a car is a necessity for daily errands.

Winters are colder than you think
Hakone is not a heavy snowfall area, but still it snows few times a year. The road surfaces freeze as it is at a height of more than 500m. So, you should preferably get a four-wheel drive car with studless winter tires or winter chains. If you will leave the house for a few days, it might be necessary to drain the pipes to prevent freezing.

Know the neighborhood for daily errands
It is important to know the locations of Supermarket, post office, hospital etc. and the business hours, as it is not convenient like in the city.

(2) Which area is convenient for living in Hakone?

Sengoku Plateau

Our recommendation is “Sengokubara Area”.  Sengoku Plateau that covers this entire area boasts of abundant natural beauty in the form of Japanese pampas grass fields and a botanical garden of wetland. Also, both “Hakoneguchi” IC (Seisho Bypass) and “Gotemba” IC (Tomei Expressway) are only a 20 minute drive from this place. These expressways make Tokyo easily accessible.

There are many supermarkets and convenience stores for residents in this area, and if you go on to Gotemba area, you will find large outlets and shopping malls. All this makes Hakone area convenient for daily life and perfect for weekend fun.

The fact that the area is mostly flat makes things even easier.

It was developed way back in 1933, with streets in a grid pattern and lots of trees on a flat area. There is a highway bus stop and local bus route in the area, so it is convenient even if you don’t have a car available or you have friends visiting from outside. The local golf courses are close by, and some lots within this community can have private Onsen (hot-spring) connection. A 20 minute walk down a gentle slope will take you to the convenient Sengokubara town.

– For those who want to enjoy the nature, but cannot live away from the city

It takes only a 4 minute walk to the post office (320m), and 8 minute walk to a supermarket (580m). Although it is located on a hill and surrounded by woods, everything is still convenient. The best thing about this place is the enchanting view of the Sengokubara town surrounded by mountains. Those who want to enjoy Onsen can opt for one of the lots where you can install a private Onsen connection.

Which community did you find the most attractive?
Our Hakone branch has some useful tips for people who want to live in Hakone.

3. Tips from Hakone branch

Winter in Hakone is harder than many people think. In fact, transportation can be a problem, and running daily errands can become inconvenient compare to being in a big city like Tokyo. Depending on the property you choose, it may need some serious renovations.  Based on your requirements, however, we can advise you on the most suitable properties for you.  Summer in Hakone is cooler and very comfortable as the average temperature is about 5 Celsius lower than Tokyo.

You already know Hakone as a travel destination, but its other face as a residential highland resort offering everyday convenience, rich natural beauty and easy access from Tokyo is equally attractive.
